For over two decades, Mezzacappa has been a primary architect of the Bay Area’s creative jazz scene, crafting works inspired by everything from noir film to cosmic fiction. With her Five(ish) ensemble, she navigates a delicate balance she calls "tight looseness"—a state in which the music is rehearsed to perfection yet remains open enough to catch the spark of the moment. "We know all the notes now," Mezzacappa explains, "and now we’re all looking for a new way to surprise each other."

This performance isn't just a recital; it’s an invitation into the creative process. Mezzacappa treats listeners as essential collaborators. As the ensemble subverts expectations with playful shifts and abstract textures, the audience’s energy helps determine where the music goes next.

What to Expect

The ensemble will perform selections from the Othrwrldly suite, including “Life is running out” and “The Dream, The Reality.” Expect a kaleidoscopic soundscape featuring Aaron Bennett’s tenor sax, Kyle Bruckmann’s oboes and synths, and Mark Clifford’s vibraphone, all anchored by the intricate rhythmic interplay of pianist Brett Carson and drummer Jordan Glenn. Regarding the live experience, Mezzacappa shares: "I really like that idea of inviting the listener into our process... You can hear people join the band in that kind of way as listeners."
